Penelope Cruz Sanchez
Penelope Cruz Sanchez was the daughter
of Eduardo Cruz (a retailer) and Encarna Sanchez (a hairdresser). When she was
a young girl, she was already a compulsive performer who would recreate
commercials from the television for her family's amusement, but she decided to
focus her energies on dance. After studying classical ballet for 9 years in
Spain's National Conservatory, she continued her studies under a group of
highly acclaimed dancers. She discovered her true passion at age 15 when she
smashed more than 300 other girls at an audition for an agency for talent. She
was offered roles in Spanish television and music videos. This contract
resulted in a variety of roles, and opened the doors to a successful career in
the world of big screens. Cruz made her film debut with The Greek Labyrinth
(1993). (The Greek Labyrinth). Following that she appeared briefly in Framed
(1992) directed by Timothy Dalton. Her final film was an Oscar-winning film,
Belle Epoque (1992), where she played one of the four sisters who compete for
the affection of a handsome deserter from the army. The film also garnered many
Goyas, the Spanish equivalent of the Academy Awards. Cruz was a well-known
Spanish actress after her three to four films per year that she added to her
resume. Live Flesh (1997) (Live Flesh) offered her the chance to work with
renowned Spanish director Pedro Almodovar (who would later be her ticket to
international fame), and the same year she was the lead actress in the
thriller/drama/mystery/sci-fi film Open Your Eyes (1997), a huge hit in Spain
that earned eight Goyas (though none for Cruz). In 1998, her fortunes changed
when she was awarded an award for the best Actress Goya for her role in the
film industry comedy La Nina De Tus Ojos (1998). Cruz went on to make several
more journeys to films in English, but All About My Mother (1999) was her first
big international hit. She played a unchaste yet well-meaning nun. Cruz was
highly sought-after on both sides of the Atlantic as her film received numerous
awards and accolades. Her next big project was Woman on Top (2000) the American
comedy about a chef with bewitching culinary skills and a severe bout of motion
